Has Motrin IB always been available over-the-counter?
Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Motrin IB, was first cleared for marketing as a prescription drug in 1974. In the United States, Motrin (ibuprofen) has been widely used in prescription strengths of 300, 400, 600 and 800 mg. Over-the-counter marketing of ibuprofen in 200mg strength was cleared for individuals 12 years and older in 1984. In 1989, prescription ibuprofen suspension liquid was approved in the United States for children six months of age and older. In 1995, Children's Motrin Ibuprofen Suspension was cleared for marketing as an over-the-counter product.

Why did so many doctors prescribe Motrin?
Motrin was an exceptionally successful prescription medication because it was shown to be effective in relieving pain and lowering fever in adults. The approval of ibuprofen for over-the-counter use was based on extensive worldwide clinical experience as a prescription drug and a substantial body of literature documenting the safety profile and efficacy of the drug.

Is over-the-counter Motrin IB the same as the prescription Motrin?
Over-the-counter Motrin IB contains the same active ingredient as prescription Motrin, but in a lower amount per tablet or caplet and is given in a lower daily dose and for different indications. Each tablet or caplet contains 200mg ibuprofen. Prescription Motrin is available in strengths of 400, 600 and 800mg.

The active ingredient in Motrin IB is ibuprofen.

What is ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAID is the general term used for a group of drugs that are effective in relieving pain and reducing inflammation (in prescription doses). Ibuprofen provides temporary reduction of fever, and relief of minor aches and pains due to colds, flu, sore throat, headaches and toothaches.

Is ibuprofen safe for me?
Ibuprofen is appropriate for a broad range of patient types. If you are under a doctor's care for any serious condition, consult a doctor before taking this product. As with aspirin and acetaminophen, if you have any condition which requires you to take prescription drugs, or if you have had any problems or serious side effects from taking any non-prescription pain reliever, do not take Motrin IB without first discussing it with your doctor.

What can Motrin IB be used for?
Motrin IB is indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains associated with the common cold, headache, toothache, muscular aches, backache, for the minor pain of arthritis, for the pain of menstrual cramps and for the reduction of fever.

When should I stop taking Motrin IB for my pains and fever?
Motrin IB should not be taken for pain for more than 10 days or for fever for more than 3 days unless directed by a doctor. If pain or fever persists or gets worse, if new symptoms occur, or if the painful area is red or swollen, consult a doctor. These could be signs of serious illness.

How do I know the correct dosage to take for Motrin IB?
When taking any medication, always read and follow the package instructions carefully. For adults taking Motrin IB: Take 1 caplet or tablet every 4 to 6 hours while symptoms persist. If pain or fever does not respond to 1 caplet or tablet, 2 caplets or tablets may be used, but do not exceed 6 caplets or tablets in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor. The smallest effective dose should be used. Take with food or milk, if occasional and mild heartburn, upset stomach or stomach pain occurs with use. Consult a doctor if these symptoms are more than mild or if they persist.

How do I know if a caplet or tablet is right for me?
The decision to choose a caplet or tablet is a matter of personal choice.
