Toothaches - Toothache Help
Print this pagePrint this page    Email this pageEmail this page
A toothache is most commonly caused by a cavity. The best way to prevent cavities is by keeping your teeth clean and your gums healthy. Be sure to brush and floss after each meal. If you do get a toothache, knowing how to relieve the pain is helpful.
Treatment
A Bite of Relief
Biting on a cotton ball that has been soaked in oil of cloves (eugenol) may help relieve a toothache. Oil of cloves is available at most drug stores and health food stores. You might also consider avoiding foods that are extremely hot or cold, as they may bring more pain to an already sensitive area.
Tips
Ask Your Dentist
Help prevent toothaches by brushing and flossing two or three times a day. Also, be sure to schedule yearly appointments with your dentist. Your dentist will use x-rays to help detect cavities and tooth decay. And while you're there, you may want to ask if there are any new home dental treatments that might be right for you.
