Child's Toothache
Print this pagePrint this page    Email this pageEmail this page
If your child has a toothache, it may be an early sign of tooth decay. If the pain doesn't clear up after a couple of days, you should make an appointment with the dentist—even if the toothache is caused by a baby tooth.
Treatment
Take a Bite out of Pain
You can give your child fast, temporary toothache relief by soaking a cotton ball in benzocaine or oil of cloves, and holding it against the problem area. Avoid giving your child very hot or very cold food or drinks. This could bring pain to an already sensitive area.
Tips
Make Brushing Fun
Teaching your child proper dental habits is important even from a very young age. Make it fun by letting them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste—there are even special flavors made just for kids!

An Apple a Day
You can avoid extra dental visits by giving your child healthy snacks like apples or bananas. Sugary foods don't easily wash away with saliva, and snacktime is far away from brushing time.
