Upper Back Pain Relief - Treatments, Medicines

Though not as common as lower back pain, upper back pain can be just as painful. As a general rule, to avoid upper back pain, you should practice good posture and keep your back and shoulders strong and flexible.

Put Your Back in Good Hands
If you are experiencing back pain, you may want to see a licensed massage or physical therapist. They can massage your upper back tissues and muscles properly, helping to ease your pain. As your pain decreases, you can keep it from coming back with an appropriate exercise program. Consult a physical therapist to find out what exercises* are right for you.

Cool, Then Heat
You can soothe sore and inflamed back muscles with cold and hot compresses. At the onset of a back injury, treat your back with a cold compress. Place ice in a bag and then wrap the bag in a towel and apply it to your back until spasms subside. After sharp pain subsides, apply heat or take a hot bath to help loosen the muscles and increase circulation.

Get Back to Work
Prolonged bad posture can lead to stiffness and strain on your back muscles, so make your workspace more conducive to healthy posture. Using an angled desk can help reduce the strain you put on your upper back. You can also make some beneficial changes in how you work by getting up every hour, stretching and walking around.

Back in Business
Though it may sound like a good idea, getting lots of bed rest is the wrong thing to do when you have back pain. Low-impact, light physical activity actually helps speed your recovery.* So make sure you keep active, but don't try and lift heavy objects or engage in any activity that might stress your back.
