Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in MOTRIN® IB, was first approved for marketing as a prescription drug in 1974.Over-the-counter marketing of ibuprofen in 200mg strength was approved for individuals 12 years and older in 1984.

Is it safe over-the-counter?
The approval of ibuprofen for over-the-counter use was based on extensive worldwide clinical experience as a prescription drug and a substantial body of literature documenting the safety profile and efficacy of the drug when used as directed.

Is over-the-counter MOTRIN® IB the same as the prescription Motrin?
Over-the-counter MOTRIN® IB contains the same active ingredient as prescription MOTRIN®, but in a lower amount per tablet or caplet and is given in a lower daily dose and for different indications. Each tablet or caplet of MOTRIN® IB contains 200mg ibuprofen. Prescription MOTRIN® was available in strengths of 300, 400, 600 and 800mg.

What is the active ingredient in MOTRIN® IB?
The active ingredient in MOTRIN® IB is ibuprofen.

What is ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) over-the-counter. NSAIDs are effective in relieving pain and reducing fever.

Who can use ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen can be used to treat pain and fever associated with a number of conditions. If you are under a doctor's care, Consult a doctor before taking ibuprofen or any other non-prescription medicine.

What can MOTRIN® IB be used for?
MOTRIN® IB is indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains due to the common cold, headache, toothache, muscular aches, backache, minor pain of arthritis, menstrual cramps, and for the temporary reduction of fever.

When should I stop taking MOTRIN® IB for my pains and fever?
MOTRIN® IB should not be taken for pain for more than 10 days or for fever for more than 3 days unless directed by a doctor. If pain or fever persists or gets worse, if new symptoms occur, or if the painful area is red or swollen, consult a doctor. These could be signs of serious illness.

How do I know the correct dosage to take for MOTRIN® IB?
When taking any medication, always read and follow the label carefully. For adults taking MOTRIN® IB: Take 1 caplet every 4 to 6 hours while symptoms persist. If pain or fever does not respond to 1 caplet, 2 caplets may be used, but do not exceed 6 caplets in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor. The smallest effective dose should be used.

Is MOTRIN® IB gentler on the stomach than aspirin?
Ibuprofen, the medicine in MOTRIN® IB, is gentler on the stomach than aspirin. Ibuprofen is an NSAID. Ask a doctor before use if you have a history of stomach problems such as heartburn. All over-the-counter NSAIDs have a stomach bleeding warning.

Can I take MOTRIN® IB with prescription medication?
If you are taking a prescription medication, you should consult your doctor before taking MOTRIN® IB or any other medication (prescription or over-the-counter).

Can I take MOTRIN® IB if I am pregnant?
As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using MOTRIN® IB products. It is especially important not to use ibuprofen during the last 3 months of pregnancy unless specifically directed to do so by a doctor because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complications during delivery.

Do I need to have a full stomach before I take MOTRIN® IB?
MOTRIN® IB does not need to be taken on a full stomach. However, if you experience occasional and mild heartburn, upset stomach or stomach pain when taking MOTRIN® IB caplets, try taking it with food or milk.
